🏔 Taste of the South tour 🏔
The North Island girls had been planning a South tour for a year and a half. Saving, preparing their trucks and gaining more excitement as the months clicked over.
28th December they caught the ferry across the Cook Strait to Picton. Meeting up with South Island 4wd touring master Marcus Wyatt and his son Lincoln.
6 trucks headed down the Island traveling the roads less taken. Some of the highlights for the team were:
Waikaia Bush Road
Old Man Range
Omarama saddle down into St. Bathans
Visiting historic pubs
Milford Sound Cruise
Skippers canyon road (one of the most dangerous roads in N.Z)
Taste of the South was all about doing a few tracks in each area, giving everyone a taste of the South Island 4wd tracks.
The girls are back into planning their next Tour "The Otago Rush" which they will be solely touring the tracks of Otago and visiting historic places and pubs along the way. Keep an eyeout for the details on that tour.
Big Thank you to @explorewithmarcus for taking us on the tour! Marcus makes fantastic videos of the South tracks. Head over to YouTube and check them out.
Thank you to everyone who came on this tour:

🩷 LOVE YOURSELF 🩷
This Valentines remember that the most important love is the love you give to yourself. .
In world so focused on comparing ourselves to others and putting our 'best face forward' it can be easy to find negatives and become self conscious. Remember all the amazing things you have accomplished, find something about your face that makes you unique and special, wear your favourite outfit and do something that makes you feel good.
There is only one you and YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL AND SPECIAL!
First outing on the NZ tour and Sam immediately bellies the Rocky!! 😅
"Just proof that even if you think you're experienced, new terrain and a new vehicle can make you feel like a beginner 4wder learning the ropes again" - Sam
ATS vs MUDDIES
When setting up your 4wd something most people struggle to decide is whether to run ATs (All Terrain) or MTs (Mud Terrain) tyres,
No.1 to consider is how you are/will be using your vehicle. Is it your daily or just a weekender?? What type of terrain will you be primarily 4wding on? If you live in an area with only sand, Muddies will likely be unnecessary, but if you live in a wet and rocky environment, then the aggressive tread may be beneficial.
No.2 is budget. A set of 5 offroad tyres can be anywhere from $1000 - $4000. This can vary due to style, size, quality, and branding. As a rough rule; the bigger and 'meaner' you go, the more expensive the tyre becomes. Also, consider that going bigger can cause other costs such as needing to upgrade the suspension to accommodate the size.
No.3 to decide is the size. For starters, you will need to reference your local law to know exactly what is legal and what will require engineering/testing. Generally, you can fit one size bigger than the factory and still be within legal limits (without lift kits). When sizing up, you will also need to have your speedometer re-calibrated as the rolling circumference changes the speed being read.
So what are the Pros & Cons?
ALL TERRAINS - ATs are the ultimate all-rounders. In our opinion, a cheap AT is the best if you're just starting out. They have thicker sidewalls than road tyres for protection when rolling over rocks and sticks on track. They also have a tread pattern that is useful for moving mud and getting grip, but not so aggressive you begin to struggle in sand.
MUDDIES - MTs are the meaner and tougher version of ATs with very aggressive treads perfect for digging through muddy tracks. MTs often are noisier and heavier on fuel consumption due to the style & composition and aren't as practical for soft sand. However, they do have a tough 4x4 visual appeal that is very popular.
I wish we could give you an easy answer. There is no "ultimate" off road tyre as everyone's vehicle & driving conditions are different. So use this as a guide to do your own research into what will work for your 4wding needs.

Westcape Howe (Albany WA) was just the spot for the day.
Starting at the Albany wind farm we followed the coastal 4wd track where there were wheel lifts angles and MUD.
Then we went down to Muttonbird for a spot of lunch.
From there we continued on to hit up the Natural Gap then down to Dunskys for arvo tea where we watched the seal family🦭.
On our way out Jo's patrol towed Nat in the Pajero sports up the track after diffing out. It was full of wombat holes and black soft sand.
Then we went for a second day with some of the Perth ladies down at Cheyenne Beach and cruised along to Bluff where we did a HUGE water crossing to find the bluff hut 🛖.
Bring on camping 19-22nd January at Moore's Hut.

Wet and windy Wellington was the traditional start to the trip out to Red rocks on Wellingtons south coast , as the journey started over the notable Devils gate the rain eased and the weather improved. After Devils gate we faced soft sand , tides and river crossing. We came to a nice open area to relax for lunch before picking a spot for camp . Camp saw us spend the night at the Karori point light house the evening was complete with a beautiful sunset and camp fire.
We're so excited to get away for Summer break!!
And so is everyone else.
This time of year can be chaos on the roads, so please be careful when travelling to your favourite camping spot or nan and pops house.
Remember that getting somewhere safe is more important than getting there quickly.

For most people, the holiday season is a time to look forward to. But for some, it is difficult and emotionally draining.
It can be complicated and tied with trauma and negative feelings. Not all have friends, family & loved ones to spend the festive season with.
So check in on those mates you haven't heard from, those who live away from or have estranged family, those who may have a smile on their face but could be doing it tough in silence.
If you need someone to talk to DM us or your local chat. Our girls are always happy to lend an ear and chat over a beer.
